Waterlooville takes its name from the Battle of Waterloo, having grown up around a coaching inn known as The Heroes, built on the London road for soldiers returning from the campaign. From those roadside origins it expanded through the 20th century into a substantial dormitory town on the northern edge of the Portsmouth conurbation, within Havant Borough.
